The Noel Collection was the life's work of Mr. James Smith Noel. It is the largest private collection of antiquarian books in the United States and is currently on permanent loan to Louisiana State University Shreveport. The collection encompasses 100+ different subject areas in such diverse fields as religion, travel literature, philosophy, science, cartography, natural history, moral instruction, curiosities, costumery, and the history of humor. The collection is particularly strong in pre-1850 European and American literature and history. These stacks are open to the public, although our materials do not circulate. Visitors are encouraged during regular business hours to use both our materials and our facilities.

The LSUS Northwest Louisiana Archives contains over 1,100 individual collections, including numerous important historical records and manuscripts relating to the Shreveport area, northwest Louisiana, and the lower Red River region commonly known as the Ark-La-Tex. The Archives collects, preserves, and makes available to researchers the rich and colorful heritage of this region. Approximately 23,000 linear feet of records and manuscripts, 800 maps, 200 oral histories, and over 1.5 million photographs and negatives document the history and culture of the region from its earliest settlement to the present.
