The Financial Aid Office is here to assist you with obtaining the funding needed to accomplish your academic goals. The Financial Aid Office administers:  federal grants, loans and work study; State of Louisiana's Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (commonly called TOPS) Scholarships and the State of Louisiana Go Grant Program; and LSUS scholarships. LSUS does not participate in private student loan programs.

Applying for Federal Financial Aid

  • Create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID).  If you are a dependent student, you will need to obtain a FSA ID for one of your parents.  The FSA ID will be used to sign your FAFSA.
  • Complete the FAFSA.  LSUS's school code is 002013.
  • After the FAFSA has been processed by the U.S. Department of Education, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR).  Your SAR will be emailed to you if you provided an email address.  If you did not provide an email address, you must check the FAFSA website to obtain your SAR.  Your SAR is used to determine your eligibility for financial aid.
  • Please allow 3-5 business days for the LSUS Financial Aid Office to receive your FAFSA file.  You can check your application status on myLSUS.  If additional forms are required they will be noted with red flags.
  • If your SAR is selected for verification, additional documents will be required.  These documents must be submitted to the LSUS Financial Ad Office before you can be awarded financial aid.
  • If you are applying for a student loan for the first time at LSUS, you are required to complete entrance counseling.  Entrance counseling is completed on-line at www.StudentAid.gov.
  • All new students are required to submit a master promissory note and entrance counseling at www.StudentAid.gov.

Please note:

  • Applicants must be seeking a bachelor's or master's degree or teacher or nursing certification.
  • Loan applicants must be enrolled at least half-time at LSUS at the time of loan disbursement.
  • LSUS does not participate in private student loan programs.
  • Students cannot receive federal financial aid for correspondence courses.
  • Students must be fully accepted for admission to the university.  All academic transcripts must be on file and evalulated by the Admissions Office before you can be awarded.  Provisionally admitted or visiting students cannot receive financial aid.
  • Students receiving financial aid must be making academic progress.  A copy of our Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy is available in the Financial Aid office.

Applying for State of Louisiana Programs

  • TOPS-Students applying for a TOPS Scholarship are encouraged to complete the FAFSA annually by April 15, July 1 at the latest. The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA) determines a student's eligibility for a TOPS Scholarship and notifies the student.  LOSFA receives academic information electronically on high school seniors as well as ACT scores.  It is important that students list LOSFA as an agency to receive their ACT scores when they are taking the ACT.  Grades on continuing students who have received TOPS Scholarships previously are automatically sent to LOSFA.  Students are notified by LOSFA of their continuing eligibility or the reason why their award has been cancelled.
  • Louisiana Go Grant-Students must be receiving a Pell Grant and are required to complete the FAFSA.

Scholarships

If you are applying for student scholarships, there is no extra application to apply for these. Submit a current, official transcript now, and then submit a final official transcript at the conclusion of the term. All ACT scores must also be on file. These documents must all be submited to the Office of Admissions and Records. There are additional scholarship opportunites provided through our generous foundation and can be found on Academic Works.

Eligibility and Conditions

With the exceptions of scholarships and fee exemptions, financial aid is awarded on the basis of need. Need is determined by the following equation:

costs - family contribution = financial need

Several types of financial aid have funding limits.  Funds with funding limits are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, with the exception of the State of Louisiana Go Grant.  Initial awards are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, but any reallocation of funds requires an analysis of the recipients to insure that at least 30% of the awards have been awarded to students over age 24.

How It Works
First, the cost of attending LSUS is calculated. Cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, books, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. The amount of financial assistance your family is expected to provide is subtracted from the total cost. The amount of financial assistance expected is established by the federally approved needs analysis. Costs minus family contribution equals financial need.

Conditions
You must be enrolled at least half-time as a regular student in pursuit of a degree or teacher certification. Sometimes Pell Grant funding is provided for less than half-time students.

You must be a U.S. citizen or establish that you are an eligible non-citizen by possessing a copy of the I-151 or I-551 Alien Registration Receipt Card.

You must maintain satisfactory academic progress SAP as established by LSUS.

New students or transfer students must have all required academic transcripts on file with the Admissions Office. Provisionally admitted students will not receive financial aid or financial aid extension.

You must not owe a refund on a Federal grant or be in default on any Federal/direct student loan previously received at any institution.

Study Abroad: Students may be eligible to receive student financial aid for study abroad if the program is offered through LSUS and approved for credit by LSUS.

You must complete a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each school year.

Students cannot receive federal financial aid for correspondence courses.
