Brenna Griffen PhD

Biography

Dr. Brenna Griffen is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral Level. She started her education journey at Harding University in central Arkansas. After obtaining her undergraduate degree, she worked for the Head Start program, teaching preschoolers from lower socioeconomic backgrounds for almost a decade. During this time, she developed a passion for connecting children and families with the resources and tools needed for success. She returned to school at the University of Arkansas, where she obtained first a master's degree in Special Education and then, a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2023. Dr. Griffen specializes in augmentative and alternative communication for individuals who have limited vocal communication skills. She has experience working in school, clinic, and home settings with individuals who are diagnosed with a variety of developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder. She is dedicated to creating exceptional behavior analysts who can provide quality services to individuals. Dr. Griffen's research interests focus on using technology for communication and for improving staff and caregiver training, leading to improved outcomes for children and families.

Research Interests

Dr. Griffen's research interest focuses on three main areas: using technologies as instructional tools, utilization of evidence-based practices (EBP), and teaching skills in naturalistic settings for children with disabilities. Her primary research interest is in evaluating the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and the teaching strategies employed to support its use. Since many individuals with developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder, struggle with communication skills and vocal speech output, practitioners need guidance on how to best support these individuals. Her secondary research interest is in using technology to train practitioners, educators, and families in the use of evidence-based practices to assist these individuals. Her third research interest is in facilitating instruction for young children in naturalistic settings. Since communication skills are needed across all environments, evidence-based instruction should occur within the settings where those skills are needed.
