We aim to inspire others on their educational journey and if we can, provide a helping hand along the way.

Associated Press Style Guide

LSU Shreveport follows Associated Press (AP) style guidelines. All faculty and staff should use AP style in official correspondences. The following are relevant guidelines from the AP style guidelines:

  • Institution Name: Louisiana State University in Shreveport or LSU in Shreveport should be used for all initial communications, but LSUS can be used for subsequent communications. LSUS can also be used in frequent and local-specific communication.
  • Time: Time should be written in numbers, except for noon and midnight, which can be referred to as noon and midnight or as a numerical time. Avoid redundancies when referring to times (like 8 p.m. tonight). Lower case letters with periods should be used for a.m. and p.m.
  • Dates: Dates should be listed as numbers without st, nd, rd or th. The names of months should always be capitalized. Spell out names with months when using alone or with a year only. When months are combined with specific dates, only abbreviate the following months: Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec.
  • Titles: Limit capitalization to titles used directly before an individual’s name. Lowercase titles that follow a name should be set off with commas. (Examples: Chancellor Robert T. Smith vs. Robert T. Smith, chancellor of LSU Shreveport.)
  • Degrees: Use an apostrophe in “bachelor’s degree” and “master’s degree.” Capitalize and do not use possessives for full titles such as Bachelor of Arts or Master of Science.
