Sexual Assault Forensic Exams
An evidence collection kit can be collected up to 120 hours, or 5 days, after an assault. Survivors are often hesitant to have an evidence collection kit because they are unsure about what will happen, especially regarding making a report to police and pressing charges. However, without evidence collection in the first 120 hours, crucial evidence could be lost and the survivor's legal case may be significantly weakened.
In Louisiana, survivors cannot be directly or indirectly billed for the forensic medical examination (rape kit). The cost of the forensic examination is submitted through the Louisiana Crime Victim Reparations Program, so students should not be charged for the forensic services associated with evidence collection. Medical care received off campus, including ambulance services and treatment beyond the forensic examination, may result in costs to the student.
Additional medical treatment that is not part of the forensic examination may be billed separately depending on the services provided and insurance coverage. A SAVE advocate can help students understand their medical options and connect them with medical advocacy and other resources.
